Approximately 78% of adults globally subscribe to multiple services, and unknowingly spend hundreds of dollars on subscriptions they don't use. I designed Subly, a mobile app that simplifies subscription management, putting essential actions at your fingertips.

Problem

Subscription fatigue is a real problem. 42% of consumers struggle to keep up with renewal dates. 89% of consumers underestimate how much they spend on subscription services, with more than half of people underestimating their monthly subscription bills by at least $100. I surveyed 5 users from my network who subscribe to at least 1 service. Only 1 participant used a subscription management app while others relied on manual tracking. Participants experienced similar difficulties:

Automatic renewals often led to forgotten subscriptions, complex unsubscribe processes, and lack of insight into subscription spending habits.

They also expressed a desire for a way to manage subscriptions without being overloaded by features. The typical person is not a power subscriber who needs granular breakdowns of their spending — secondary research reaffirms this as the average American subscribes to 4.5 services.

opportunity

Subscription management should not feel like a chore — simplicity is at the core of Subly’s design. Each feature is intentionally built to make subscription management effortless. I focused on the existing user’s journey:

streamlined user task flow

Focus on clear, direct actions that help users achieve their goals, informing a minimalist site architecture

solution

I designed a sleek, modular dashboard built for action. The search bar at the top makes finding any subscription effortless and important actions like setting renewal alerts are positioned prominently. Subscription cards showcase essential details and are intuitive for navigation to their respective pages.

Efficient Action Hub

The list format is ideal for users managing multiple subscriptions, reducing cognitive load and streamlining interactions. Iterations enhanced navigation clarity, and resulted in a more personalized, engaging design

frictionless alerts

One-tap to set alerts for all subscriptions and customizable notification times for added flexibility

Inspired by IOS Wallet, I presented each subscription service as a “card”. A modal sits under the card, showing spending insights, alert settings, and payment history.

reimagined subscription page

Swiping up expands the modal while swiping down collapses the view, returning to the snapshot. Iterations optimized the screen space, upped the feed density, and added better affordances for secondary info

For services linked to an Apple account, unsubscribing is as simple as two steps: tap "Unsubscribe" and confirm.

Two-step Unsubscribe

Change is immediately reflected in the appearance of the subscription card and in the dashboard

I designed a calendar page and an insights page to help users make sense of their subscription patterns, fortifying user decision-making.

next steps

Since this project, I’ve developed a belief that for apps where tasks are central to the experience, balancing simplicity with functionality is key. This required thoughtful prioritization and simplifying high-volume quantitative information into clear, digestible visuals.

Designing Subly was a challenge in streamlining complexity, and it deepened my understanding of how strategic design decisions enable users to reach their desired outcomes.
